Celebrate Lit: Returning to Breakers

By Rachel Skatvold

returnign to breakersThere’s always that one friend or family member—the one everyone goes to for advice. They provide a listening ear or a shoulder to cry on. Tiffany Hill has filled that description for years—offering Godly wisdom, advice, and quoting Bible verses for all who needed encouragement. So, what happens when the advice giver needs advice?

Years after the death of her Marine husband, Tiffany has three young children to care for and her family-owned store to worry about. Overwhelmed by running the business alone, she begins to long for a change of pace. When Tiffany’s family and friend notice she is floundering in her responsibilities, they arrange a week-long getaway for Tiffany and her kids at a resort on Mimosa while they secretly make repairs on the store. At first the getaway is a dream come true, but what will it all be ruined when she runs into her old high school sweetheart?

The main character in Returning to Breakers is inspired by my oldest sister, Becky. While Tiffany is a fictional character with plenty of differences from my sister, there are certain aspects of her personality and details about Becky that were included in the story. For example, motorcycle themed dates with her future husband, having three kids, and her dog named Opal. However, the most inspiring similarities are her kindness and wisdom. Becky has always been a wonderful advice giver and role model for me. It has been a blessing to have her in my life.

This book’s theme is also inspired by a Bible verse from Philippians 4:6-7 which says, “Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank Him for all He has done. Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus.” I have to confess, there are times when I am guilty of allowing worry to get the best of me. In the story, Tiffany also struggles with worry. However, her story serves as a reminder to pray and hand over our worries to God. He brings us peace.
