Winter Beauty

Winter Beauty

The other morning, I was out driving when I noticed hundreds of geese flying high in the sky spiraling downward toward the flooded fields below.  The morning light was brightly reflecting their white underbellies against the brilliant blue sky.  Each one in pattern, a sparkling glorious sight giving the illusion of a beautiful flowing ribbon softly flowing in the breeze.  Their unity was displayed like a well-choreographed dance.  I pulled over to watch the birds and to take some pictures which didn’t do justice to the beauty I beheld.

I have never seen so many geese flying in such a pattern before.  It was a rare and awe-inspiring sight.  I reluctantly pulled away from the scene, my eyes focused on the road before me and the surrounding fields filled with dying brown grass and leafless trees.  My thoughts drifted contemplating the beauty that lies within the boundaries of winter which we often see as a dark, cold and bleak season.

I don’t care for cold weather but I love the beauty that winter brings.  The woods I drive by every morning and evening, usually dense with every kind of vegetation, are now dying back and visible with brightly colored leaves covering the ground below.   The occasional fall and winter bloom graces the scene.  Birds seem to be more active; flying in huge flocks appearing as flowing streamers in the sky.   Majestic hawks, rarely seen in the summer months, now sit aloft in tree tops or soar high in the cool breeze.  Graceful deer, along with some less appealing critters, showing themselves more often in the cool days and even colder nights.   The sun, seemingly so much less harsh, causes dappling light to dance on decks and lawns bringing warmth to the bones.  Crisp air and frosty mornings greet us when we leave the comfort of our homes.  This past week we even had snow, beautiful glistening white snow, so rare in Louisiana, blanketed everything from the tallest of trees to the deepest crevices below.

Though winter can be filled with wonderous beauty it can be extremely harsh as well.  The months can seem to drag on; the cold seeping into your very bones.  The bleak and harsh conditions can often bring an emotional discouragement in one’s heart.  Life is no different, especially when we are in the middle of difficult circumstances.  You wonder if the difficult times will ever end and if things will ever get better.  The hardships can seep in and cause you to forget the beauty of life and the blessings all around.

Remember that winter will always lead into spring bringing new life with it.  The winter months, though unseen, bring real benefit to all of nature preparing the way for the upcoming spring and summer months.  It is a necessary season though at times it seems cruel with freezing temperatures and dark gloomy days.  And so, it is in life, there are times of great difficulty where we feel cold, dark and snowed in with trying situations and a heavy heart.  But be encouraged just as winter never lasts forever neither will your difficulties last forever.  God uses the tough times in our life to prepare the way for new things to come.  As we allow Him to work in our lives God can use those difficult times to make us stronger and more like Jesus.

And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose. For those God foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brothers and sisters.

Romans 8:28-29

We have His promise that nothing, not even the harshest of times, can separate us from the Love of Christ.  He loves us and He keeps us even in the midst of great difficulty.

Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall trouble or distress or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword?  As it is written: "For your sake we face death all day long; we are considered as sheep to be slaughtered."  No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our LORD.

Romans 8:35-39

Though the winter months in our lives may seem to have an upper hand at times, we will not be defeated.  God makes us more than conquerors through any situation.

We are pressed on all sides, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed.

2 Corinthians 4:8-9

The winter is never meant to harm.  It is a dormant season that helps bring the renewal of life in everything it touches.   Spring will come but in the meantime, look for and choose to focus on the beauty in every situation.  It is out there, you just have to look for it and believe that He is speaking to you through it.  Take your eyes off the difficulties and focus on God and His Word.  He is your help.  Trust, pray and seek Him.  God’s beauty dances before our eyes every day no matter the situation.  Let His beauty dance within your heart in your difficult situations.  The Lord is faithful and just to keep you.  He has a plan and a purpose for your life.

For I know the plans I have for you," declares the LORD," plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.

Jeremiah 29:11
