God and Poles Are Everywhere... part 3

Here I am, a couple months out from the run-in with the Lowes pole, still thinking and writing about poles, in part, because of some lasting pain in my brow area. Driving along rural roads and city streets I couldn’t help but notice all the sign posts and fence posts dotting the landscape. What are posts anyway, but shorter poles? Like electrical/telephone poles, sign and fence posts are everywhere.

Sign posts give us directions or tell us things. Likewise, the Bible has the answers for all of mankind and it is a guide. It is God’s word to his people. Psalm 119:105Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.Psalms 37:23The steps of a good man are ordered by the LORD: and he delights in his way.” His word gives us direction just as sign posts can lead us in the correct direction or relay valuable information. Psalms 19:7-11The law of the Lord is perfect, converting the soul: the testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple. The statutes of the Lord are right, rejoicing the heart: the commandment of the Lord is pure, enlightening the eyes. The fear of the Lord is clean, enduring forever: the judgments of the Lord are true and righteous altogether. More to be desired are they than gold, yea, than much fine gold: sweeter also than honey and the honeycomb. Moreover by them is thy servant warned: and in keeping of them there is great reward.

Fence posts are used as borders and to keep boundaries, keeping something in or something out. Just as fences are used for establishing boundaries and for protection, God has set boundaries in His word for us to follow. Those boundaries, commandments or rules are designed to keep us safe, sound, protected and secure. He is not a mean or vengeful God but a loving God who cares about the choices we make in life; therefore, he has established boundaries, rules and commandments. Rules are good and when we obey God’s rules, there are promises that come with obedience. “If you fully obey the Lord your God and carefully follow all his commands I give you today, the Lord your God will set you high above all the nations on earth. All these blessings will come on you and accompany you if you obey the Lord your God:Deuteronomy 28:1-2 Fences can be a symbolic reminder that God keeps us secure within His loving and protective care. “Blessed be the LORD, my rock, my lovingkindness and my fortress, my stronghold and my deliverer, my shield and He in whom I take refugePsalms 144: 1a, 2a

Another thought-provoking fact about poles or posts is that they are most commonly buried in the ground. Deep holes are dug and then tightly tamped or concreted to strengthen the pole or post and keep it in its place. Post and poles can also be fastened to a concrete base for stability. Either way they are “rooted” for extra stability so that they can’t be knocked down or moved easily. Therefore, posts and poles are able to fulfil their purpose. This is a picture perfect reminder that when you and I are rooted in a relationship with God, through Jesus Christ, we are established and strengthened. “Therefore, just as you have received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live in Him, rooted and built up in Him, established in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness.Colossians 2:6-7 Likewise, when we are rooted in God we can’t easily be moved from our walk of faith. “He only is my rock and my salvation: He is my defence; I shall not be moved.Psalms 62:6

Last but not least, there are fishing poles. We all know what fishing poles are used for. It is interesting that many of the disciples Jesus chose were fishermen and He even commissioned his disciples telling them in Matthew 4:19, “And he said unto them, Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.” In truth, we are all called to carry His light, His power into the world and to be fishers of men. We are to share the Gospel and the life of Jesus both through word and example that we might win others over to Christ. We are to be rooted in a relationship with Him. As we pass all the different types of poles throughout our days let them remind us of Jesus and His sacrifice on the cross, that He is our guide, our light and our protector. He keeps us safe in the boundaries of His care and love.   He loves us with an everlasting love.
