The Lost Earring

The Lost Earring

Recently our pastor encouraged us to not be discouraged with our circumstances or with the things happening around us.  He exhorted us to keep our eyes focused on the Lord because He was with us and would take care of us.  As my pastor continued to speak, I was reminded of an incident that happened just the week before.  I lost one of my favorite pair of earrings that I have worn almost every day for more years than I can remember.   I had been shopping earlier so had worn a mask, the type that go around your neck and you pull up to cover your mouth and nose.  After shopping I had taken the mask off, pulling it up and over my head which is always a bit of an ordeal with my long curly hair.  I have pulled earrings out of my ear lobes while doing this on more than one occasion.  When I got home I proceeded to unload groceries from the car.   After I finished unloading the groceries I noticed that one of my earrings was missing.  I was in a panic because I love those earrings for many different reasons.  I have never found another pair of earrings quite like them so, to me, they are irreplaceable.  I immediately ran back out to my car, praying to God and asking that He help me find the lost earring, all the while hoping that it would be in the car.  I thought that maybe when I took off my mask it had fallen off unnoticed but alas I did not find it in the car.  My next thought was that maybe when I took off my mask it had caught in my hair and the brisk wind had caused it to fall without me realizing it.  Still silently praying I began to retrace my steps carefully perusing the ground as I went.  When I came around the back of the car I noticed something small gleaming up at me from the ground below.  There was my earring, just a small portion peeping out from where it had fallen, almost embedded at the edge of a small ant pile. I was ecstatic and thanked God for helping me find my earring!    

After the sermon I continued to contemplate the encouraging message in light of the answered prayer for the lost earring.  Thoughts swirled around in my mind about just how good God is, and because of who He is, we never need to be discouraged.  Why should God care that I find my earring?  It was but a small thing, and in the real scheme of things, seemingly very unimportant.  Yet, He still answered my prayer.  As I contemplated the facts I was overwhelmed with the realization that what is important to me is important to God.  I guess, deep down, hidden in the recesses of my mind, I have always known this truth but I had not ever really absorbed this knowledge and now it exploded with glorious revelation inside my heart.  He loves me. He cares about me.  If He cares so much about the little things that are important to me, how much more does He care about the all the big stuff going on in my life?  And as I look back, I remember other things He has done for me both small and large.  He has answered countless prayers that might seem to be insignificant to an onlooker but to me, like finding the earring, it was important.  He has answered prayers in so many amazing and unique ways.  I have some truly amazing stories to tell about His hand and grace moving in my life. Some prayers were answered quickly, some I have had to wait on and, for others I am still waiting, but through it all He has been steady, true and faithful in my life.  I am blessed beyond measure. 

Beloved, it is no different for any child of God.  He loves each and every single one of us.  He loves you.  He cares for you.  What is important to you is important to Him.  The small things He can often answer with the snap of a finger, like helping me find the earring.  Now, the big things we ask for and/or need (salvation of loved ones, difficult circumstances, financial and healing needs, etc…) sometimes take a little bit longer because there are things that often have to be finely tuned and worked out but know that He and Jesus are always working, “But Jesus replied, ‘My Father is always working, and so am I.” John 5:17   You can know that, as you allow Him, He is always working in and for you as well, “For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure.” Philippians 2:13  It is so amazing that He cares about every aspect of our life.  We are important to Him.  If we can grab a hold of these truths and remember that God is good and faithful then discouragement cannot invade our heart.  Discouragement will never gain a foothold and overwhelm us because we are ultimately trusting that God is in control.  Even when we can’t see His plan we can know that He has a wonderful plan for our lives. He is always working toward that end.  He wants to do great and mighty things for us and through us.  Don’t let discouragement creep into and get a stronghold in your life.  Fight any discouraging thoughts with God’s word, prayer and remembering that you are extremely important to Him.  You are special to His very heart.  He wants the best for your life.  He delights in answering prayers for you whether small, medium or large.  If God feeds the birds of the sky and clothes this earth in beauty how much more will He take care of you? (See Matthew 6:25-34)  

Remember, God cares about what you care about.  Don’t be discouraged.  Keep in mind that God is always good.  When discouragement comes knocking at your door, instead of letting it get the best of you, ponder His great love, care and faithfulness to you. “Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable-if anything is excellent or praiseworthy-think about such things.”  Philippians 4:8
