Celebrate Lit: Delicious Devotions

By Melissa Wardwell

Delicious Devotions

Delicious Devotion is the culmination of my contributions to The Independence Islands. Every legal battle, every relationship, every hint that aggravated readers because the situation was left open in previous books, will be answered in this one. Even a long-awaited wedding that I have received private messages over from several individuals.

I must admit, writing this book, this final season on the islands, came with plenty of tears on my behalf. You know it going to be a special book when the author finds themselves crying. From tender moments between Beth and Scott to startling revelations from Scott’s past, this story is packed with plenty of page turning moments.

Delicious Devotion is also more about Scott and less about Beth. I felt it was important to open a window into his past and the heart of the man that captured her attention in Scrumptious Independence. This might sound a little crazy, but he wouldn’t exactly open up to me to share his story until now. I guess you can say he is slow to warm up to people, but as hints of his past, and another side of him we’ve yet to witness, come to light we see he not as perfect as some previously perceived. He is a man who hides some of his feelings and has a few insecurities. Insecurities that have him making a scene in the middle of the park with a visitor to the islands.

There is a new character that visits the islands in search of Scott. He comes from the South Pacific islands called Suamalie and though he is an all-around good guy, he brings trouble for Scott. Iukua, or Ike, is a former collage buddy of our favorite hero but his appearance, and naturally flirtatious ways, bring out a side to Scott readers are not used to associating with him. The news Ike carries with him will both shake Scott while filling in a part of him that has been missing for years.

Beth’s saga with her family does come to a tipping point that brings her to the edge of throwing in the towel and calling the wedding off. Or at least giving in to Scott’s suggestion to elope. Readers will find a flawed mother longing to do better by her youngest daughter but struggles with her own issues bring a black cloud wherever she goes. Their rift will even cause Beth’s two sisters to choose sides.

Throughout this series, these characters have faced their demons while learning to trust God’s hand on their lives. They have lost and loved, married and buried, celebrated and cried all while searching for something more. Finishing Delicious Devotion was like saying good-bye to dear friends. Of course, the hardest was Gram, who left this final piece of wisdom to the bride and groom…

“Be vulnerable with each other, in every way. If you cannot be vulnerable and open with your spouse, then there is no trust in your foundations.”

I would say this can be said for any relationship. We build the strongest bonds when we are willing to be transparent and vulnerable with others.

Thank you for joining me on this journey. Now, watch for me in the upcoming Suamalie Islands Series.
