Energy Recipes

The following information was provided by my on staff Fitness Nutritionist.  Lack of energy is a very general complaint that I hear from my clients.  In fact, it is a very general complaint from most adults.

Energy is something that we all are always looking for more of. You might barely have energy when you wake up in the mornings or suffer from a mid day slump. Adding the right foods into your diet could help give you that boost you are looking for. Foods that are high in omega-3’s, healthy fats, and B vitamins are good sources for energy. Some of those foods include berries and melons, bananas, protein, avocados, quinoa, leafy greens, beans, nuts, greek yogurt, and a variety of other fruits and vegetables. Below are recipes that will help boost your energy and your cognitive function because they have very good sources of healthy fats,  B vitamins, and are high in omega-3’s. So, if you start your day with healthy energy boosting foods and end your day the same way, you might find that you will skip your mid day slump and wake up feeling refreshed and energized and ready to tackle your day every morning.

Ingredients....

4 servings

1 tablespoon plus 2 teaspoons extra-virgin olive oil

1 medium-large sweet potato, peeled and diced

1 large onion, diced

4 cloves garlic, minced

2 tablespoons chili powder

4 teaspoons ground cumin

½ teaspoon ground chipotle chile (see Note)

¼ teaspoon salt

2½ cups water

2 15-ounce cans black beans, rinsed

1 14-ounce can diced tomatoes

4 teaspoons lime juice

½ cup chopped fresh cilantro

Preparation:  Heat oil in a Dutch oven over medium-high heat. Add sweet potato and onion and cook, stirring often, until the onion is beginning to soften, about 4 minutes. Add garlic, chili powder, cumin, chipotle and salt and cook, stirring constantly, for 30 seconds. Add water and bring to a simmer. Cover, reduce heat to maintain a gentle simmer and cook until the sweet potato is tender, 10 to 12 minutes. Add beans, tomatoes and lime juice; increase heat to high and return to a simmer, stirring often. Reduce heat and simmer until slightly reduced, about 5 minutes. Remove from heat and stir in cilantro.

Also, doing a mild detox can help boost your energy levels.  A mild detox is very simple.  One of the most simple is drinking water with lemon on a daily basis.  Staying hydrated is vital in maintaining good health and energy as well.

Give these things a try and see if helps to boost your energy!  If so, share this information with your family and friends!  I'm sure they would appreciate all the help they can get in this area as well!
