Better Life

Have you ever been in a place in life where you couldn't see past "your life"?  Maybe it was dire circumstances with finances, health, or relationships.  Maybe you felt or feel you are living a life that is less than desirable....whatever the circumstances may be.  It may be that you feel that where you are in life, and the "theme of your life and circumstances" are the cards you were dealt and you settle in and prepare to live out the rest of your days in that manner.

This is an extreme example, but I have a client who has a genetic condition called Freidrich's Ataxia.  It is a neuro muscular disorder that usually presents itself in childhood and progresses in such a manner that by early adulthood the victim is wheelchair bound with a grim future ahead.  The prognosis only offers decline in health and mobility.  My client was diagnosed at age 12.  She said that she knew, according to the doctors, that once she reached the point that she was wheel chair bound, that it was only down hill from there.  She became completely wheelchair bound by the age of 20.  She became depressed and felt hopeless.  She felt that this was how she would live out the rest of her days, with more decline in her health and in her future.  She gave in to this "way of life".  She couldn't see past the "four walls" of her life.  There was nothing outside of her "house of circumstances" that she was living in.  There was nothing offering her hope for a different life.  In December, 2013, God stepped in and changed her life.

As I was grocery shopping one Saturday, I passed her husband pushing her in a wheelchair in the grocery store.  I had never seen them before.  I noticed she was very young and it was heartbreaking seeing such a beautiful, young woman in a wheelchair.  I continued to shop and then paid for my groceries.  As I was walking to my car with my groceries, I noticed they were heading out to their car as well.  Suddenly, God spoke to me loud and clear.  He clearly told me to approach them and offer my services to her as a personal trainer at no charge. I had no idea what her condition was. I just knew that if God told me to offer this to her, her would give me the knowledge I needed to train her in the gym.  I approached them and did exactly what God had told me to do.  To make a long story short, she accepted my offer.  We met a short time after to discuss her condition.  Her first training session was on New Year's Eve, 2013.  She has been working with me for 2 months now.  She is doing things that the doctors have told her she wouldn't be able to do in this stage of her condition. Three weeks ago, I helped her out of her wheelchair and she walked for the first time in 6 years!  She is doing more and more and becoming so strong!  We registered her for a 5K that will be held on March 22nd.  She is so excited and is pushing herself hard to get ready for this race!  Not only is her physical body getting stronger and healthier, she now has a sense of hope about her life!  She looks forward to her future and all the goals she has set for herself.  Instead of being depressed and looking at a future of doom, God showed her that there was so much more for her than the "house of circumstances" that she was living in!

My own personal example of not being able to see past my four walls....my house of circumstances....the cards I felt I had been dealt....changed a few years ago.  I am a mother of 4 girls.  I decided to become a stay at home mom and take care of my children. I took care of children 24/7 for many years.  Although I loved being at home with them, I often felt the world was passing me by.  I felt I was a great mom, but outside of that I felt I had no significant purpose or meaning.  I felt that this was the way my life was supposed to be.  Yet, I felt an emptiness deep within.  When my youngest daughter started school and all of my girls were in school full time, I went through somewhat of a depression.  I had not prepared myself for this.  I had taken care of children around the    clock for years and suddenly, for a majority of the day, they were at school.  I was at home alone.  I began to really question my purpose and meaning during that time.  I began praying hard about this.  God began to move.  He began to open doors, spoke clearly to me, and guided me into the life I am living today.  I became certified as a personal trainer, and eventually opened my own gym!  I became a co host of a radio talk show for women, and am also writing this column as a health and fitness columnist!  There are so many things God has brought into my path to do, and there are so many things in the works that I NEVER dreamed I would do!!  I did not settle in and accept the future that I thought was mine....that outside of my children I had no meaning and purpose.  I didn't settle for the deep emptiness that I had been feeling.  I didn't remain where I was....feeling that my life would never be more than it was.  Now I am helping SO many people and doing something I am passionate about at the same time!  I am still a mom of 4 beautiful girls and they are first and foremost above everything.  But I am at a place in my life where I can do both.  My gym and my career is not only my passion but it is also my ministry.  Without this I never would have been able to help and minister to my client that has Freidrich's Ataxia!

I tell all of my clients to never settle for the circumstances they are in.  I tell them to look past their "four walls".  There is so much that they can achieve.  You have to open yourself up to the possibilities.  And with God the possibilities are endless.  With God nothing is impossible!  The motto for my gym is DO MORE, BE MORE.  God wants to open up the possibilities to us!  Just like my client with Freidrich's Ataxia, the life of "doom" that she settled into (and rightfully so) has changed completely.  Her future is full of possibilities, potential, and hope that she was convinced didn't exist....until now!  She will reach her goal on March 22nd and finish the 5K!  She will set more goals, and reach them too!  She will help inspire others along the way.  The same hope is available for you.  Never give in to where you are.  There is a big life ahead of you!  You have to see past the life you are living.  You have to see past your 4 walls and move out of your house of circumstances!  You have to know that no matter how things look, you don't have to settle for it!  There is so much more that you can do and a life full of possibilities available to you.  Your life can be so much more than it is.  Your obstacles and circumstances will lie to you and tell you that your life will never get any better. But with God your future is HUGE!!

Psalm 40:2....He brought me up also out of the pit of hopelessness, out of the miry clay and set my feet upon a rock and straightened my steps.
