Is Your Nose Up or Down?

Discouragement is everywhere so it is easy to succumb to all the discouraging voices if we aren’t careful. Even the most optimistic people in the world have to push back all the negative voices at times.

The “nose pointing up or down” phrase isn’t my own; it is something I read in one of John Maxwell’s books titled “How High Will You Climb?  Maxwell says that just as the angle of a plane determines altitude, so does the approach we take in life determines how far we will climb.  I paraphrased a bit, but you get the point.

So let’s look at a plane, when a plane’s nose is pointed up, it gathers momentum to climb. Because the nose is up, the plane goes up.  Compare this same analogy to your attitude; think of a positive person; because they look up, they climb up. On the contrary, if the plane’s nose is pointed down, the plane begins to descend; it starts to drop. To think of it, when the nose of the plane is down, it gains momentum too. That momentum, however, isn’t propelling it higher, instead it’s taking a nose dive.

Again, this is true of our attitudes. If we look at everything through the lens of pessimism, we can count on eventually feeling letdown, discouraged, depressed, and despondent.  Everything you look at will be looked at through these dark and deeply disturbed lenses; you will not be positive.  The same is true on the opposite side.  If you wake up each day, even if you are not feeling well, but you point yourself in the direction positivity; you point yourself upwards, your mind and your attitude will change for the better. The key is that you would have decided to take control of your attitude.

The difference between living a negative and a positive life really lies in our attitudes. If you can say something nice, say it rather than saying something crass and sarcastic.

So, where is your nose pointing? Is it up or down?  You can determine that with a little effort.
