God's Encouragement in the Twists and Turns

August 21, 2017 was an absolutely beautiful day.  The much publicized solar eclipse, last seen in 1918, was following a path across our nation and partially over our city.  Our whole firm, one by one, was blessed to view the unique occurrence through a pair of eclipse glasses that one of our co-workers had won from her eye doctor.   When I left work that evening it was still beautiful outside with the sun bright and high, set in the midst of blue skies and white billowy clouds.   As I headed east, the wind began to kick up blowing sand, leaves and paper across the road.  Still I didn’t see any bad weather ahead.  However, when I turned south I crossed an invisible line right into what seemed to be a torrential rain.  It was as if I had passed through a portal into a completely different weather zone.

When I was a child growing up in El Paso I experienced this scenario often.  Rain was rare and it would sometimes rain on one house and not the house next door but I haven’t seen this happen often in Louisiana.  When it rains here it rains in really big areas, dark skies everywhere, leaving no place untouched.  It is a rarity to walk in and out of rain from one house to another or one street to another.  Yet here I was in a heavy rain after just leaving a most beautiful peaceful day just a foot behind.  As I continued to drive I could barely see two feet in front of me.  I slowed to a snail’s pace, putting on flashers, along with the multitudes of drivers around me with an occasional brave soul scurrying past on the dangerous wet and slippery road.   As I turned west I passed through a second portal right back into beautiful sunshine and blue skies.  Only the quickly drying raindrops all over the hood of my car indicating the downpour I had just driven through.

As I continued to travel west the most glorious scene lay before me.  The sky was filled with huge beautiful cottony clouds; the sun’s light was pouring through every available nook, cranny and opening.  It was as if the sun’s rays were kissing all the earth that lay below.  Light and glory burst forth in brilliant splendor.   My gaze was transfixed by the beauty of the view.   Soon, I had to turn south and then east again and all the glory was now behind me.  As I turned east the heavy rainseemed to have disappeared except for a little bit of gray haze.  Beautiful blue skies surrounded me and there was an absolutely beautiful bright and distinct rainbow that extended from the north to the south as far as the eye could see.

Tears came unbidden to my eyes.  My heart was overwhelmed.  Not once, but twice, in just a matter of minutes God had used His creation to encourage me and assure me of His promises, love and care.    I was reminded that everything that God allows in my life is filtered through His great love for me.  It was as if He was saying “Everything is going to be alright.  Don’t worry.  I love you.  I have it all under control.”

There are some amazing truths to be gleaned from the happenings on this particular day.  First of all, this was a special day.  Something took place in our corner of the world that had not happened for over 100 years and everyone in our firm was blessed to share the experience together.  All days are special and notjust those with seldom seen eclipses but because God is in the midst of every single day.  He rules and reigns.  But on August 21, 2017 the sun and the moon crossed each other’s paths right smack dab in the middle of our day!  Such a wonderful picture story emerges.  The sun gives light; Jesus the Son of God gives light.  The moon reflects the sun’s light; we are to reflect Jesus’ light.  He is in our path every day, near to us.  Both the sun and the moon are faithful witnesses in the sky.  (Psalms 89: 36-37).    Jesus was a faithful witness to the Father.  We are to be faithful witnesses unto Jesus and for God every day.  Let your light shine!

This little light of mine, I'm gonna let it shine…Let it shine, let it shine, let it shine…

During that early evening, ina short time frame,I took five turns heading in all different directions; east, south, west, south and east again, the heavy rain was in the midst of my turns.  Life is like that.  There are so many paths we travel; so many twists and turns which bring us in one direction or another.  We often don’t know where those paths lead and what we will experience along those paths.  Most of my travel that day was beautiful and clear yet I also experienced a storm.  Life, too, can be beautiful, calm and clear and in an instant, just a short turn away, it can be filled with calamities, troubles and difficulties.

In the bright sunshine of day, I was smiling on the inside, happy-go-lucky and care free.   The minute I hit the storm I slowed my pace, both hands tensely gripped the steering wheel.  I took stock of the situation, was more careful and more aware of my surroundings though I couldn’t see very far in front of me.  The carefulness was coupled with a bit of worry and fear along with irritation at the drivers unconcerned with the safety of those they were whizzing past.   On any given day, we are muchthe same; when our circumstances are good we are at peace with life, happy and skipping along without a care in the world.  But when those difficult days, situations and circumstancescome we start to doubt and worry. If we are not vigilant, fearcan take over rather than trusting in God.  Learning to trust God is a road we all must travel and as we allow Him to work in us we will grow in Him and eventually conquer fears and doubts.  He will bring us through every storm as we trust in Him.

Trust in the LORD with all your heart

And do not lean on your own understanding.

In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He will make your paths straight.

Proverbs3:5-6

The most amazing thing about that beautiful day was that God used so many things to make me aware that He was right there with me all day long.He was there when I woke in the morning to the peaceful sounds of the birds singing, insects buzzing outside my window and the soft light of morning rays streaming through my blinds.   He was there at noon displaying his glory in the heavens for the entire world to see.  He was there in the midst of the storm as He kept me safe.  He was there the minute the storm was over, filling the sky before me with paintings that only He could have ever painted.  His splendor displayed.  At every twist and turn and every path I took that day He was there.  He reminded me that any situation can change within a moment’s notice and seemingly without warning but with that same knowledgeHe gently reminded me that when those things happen He is there.  He hasn’t left.   Whenthe rain and storms come in the midst of the paths taken every day, every single thing He allows is always filtered through His fingers of love.  Nothing touches me apart from His love.  He will never leave me or forsake me.  He is always there to forgive, mend and heal.  He reminded me that He keeps His promises and there is always hope and restoration.Be reminded today that He will do no less for you.  He is always there for you.  You are special to His very heart.  He loves you and nothing, absolutely nothing, can separate you from His love.

For I am convinced that neither death nor life,

Neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future,

Nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation,

Will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Romans 8:38-39
