There was a doctor who needed a lung transplant. His donor was a young woman who had committed suicide. Years later during a break at a local medical symposium the doctor struck up a conversation with a company representative at a booth. This man said that he began selling medical equipment shortly after the suicide of his daughter. During the course of their conversation, the doctor began to realize that this was the father of his lung donor. After exchanging phone numbers, the doctor looked at his watch and said he had to move on if he was going to get a run in before supper. It turned out that the man also ran. Eventually the two began entering marathons throughout the South. After some time elapsed the doctor asked this man why he always stayed so close to his elbow when they ran together. The man replied, "So I can hear my daughter breathing again."
Tears fell from my eyes unbidden as I read; my heart broke and went out to the man who had lost his daughter in such a tragic manner. At the same time I was overwhelmed at the “God-incidence” in this story. What were the chances that the doctor with his new lungs would meet the father of the donor? What were the chances that they would strike up a conversation and find a common love of running? What were the chances that they would become friends and begin to run marathons together?

The words “So I can hear my daughter breathing again” were poignant and amazing. They are a testimony to the fact that God sovereignly wrapped this father up in His arms and brought healing into his heart. God can turn a tragedy around and bring new life into any situation. The doctor’s last straw of hope was a lung transplant. Without lungs his breath would stop. The young lady lost her life through turmoil of heart and mind. Her breath stopped but the doctor received continued breath through her lungs. The father lost his daughter, his world broken, his precious daughter gone. But through a series of miraculous events he experienced a small touch of his daughter back in his life. His daughter, Breathing Again, in the form of a man running next to him.

Tragedy has a way of causing us to hold our breath and feel as if we cannot breathe. When tragedy strikes we don’t understand and are left asking so many questions. How did this happen? Why did this happen? Why me and my loved ones? It is not often that we stumble upon answers such as the one my Uncle Ed shared in his Christmas Letter, in which we clearly see God’s hand and love in action in a tangible way. Yet we know in our hearts that He is always working quietly behind the scenes “both to will and to do of His good pleasure.” Phillipians 2:13 Causing all things to work together for good in our lives, “And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.” Romans 8:28

God’s Word is full of wonderful promises and we can count on the fact that He loves us more than we can even imagine. We are always in His care and under His watchful eye. He is forever faithful. Life will deal us difficult and sometimes even terrible situations but it will never change the fact that God will always be there to offer a helping hand, a way out, redemption, a ray of hope and the list goes on and on. He will never leave us nor forsake us. Look for Him in every situation because He is there to comfort, help, bring hope and ultimately help us to Breathe Again.

I lift up my eyes to the mountains—
where does my help come from?
My help comes from the Lord,
the Maker of heaven and earth.
He will not let your foot slip—
he who watches over you will not slumber;
indeed, he who watches over Israel
will neither slumber nor sleep.
Psalms 121:1-4
