Author of The Healing Powers Series
The Healing Powers of Vinegar, 3rd Edition
Q: What inspired this book? How did it come about?
More than 15 years ago, an editorial consultant was looking for an author to write a book on the health link between red wine and red wine vinegar. It was that or ghostwriting a book for a cardiologist. I accepted the vinegar assignment. While his idea was a good one, after I got scientists to go to work for me and discover the tie between wine and wine vinegar was less than more, I wasn’t ready to give up.
I fell into the health benefits of all vinegars and the Mediterranean diet including olive oil (my next book), and a heart healthy diet and lifestyle which became the underlying theme of my book. The vinegar book turned out to be the first one to ignite the Healing Powers Series—and as the consultant predicted “It will have a long shelf life.” Gosh, I wrote it last century in 1999—and now the third edition is with us. Actually, the past editions have sold more than ¼ million copies, is available in 12 formats, translated in more than a dozen languages, and was featured in Good Cook and One Spirit book clubs as well as covered major national magazines around the globe.
Q: What is the main theme of your book?
The premise of this book is how vinegar can help enhance your body, mind, and spirit.
Q: What was the hardest part of writing your book?
At first, because there are so many vinegar books in the book world it was a challenge to make mine stand out. But, because I have a master’s degree in English (Creative Writing), it was easy to put together a book full of stories (historical and personal) that read like a novel. Translation: I take you into Vinegar World and because of the twists and turns it’s exciting not a boring read.
Q: How did you come up with the concept and the setting?
The idea to incorporate all vinegars but focus on apple cider vinegar and red wine vinegar ssuperfoods was easy for me. After all, I had been the diet and nutrition columnist for years. The thing is, instead of writing in a third person narrative I chose to create a reader-friendly book using a chatty first person style that is more fun to write and more fun to read.
Q: Is any part of The Healing Powers of Vinegar factual?
Yes, my book is full of facts based on exclusive interviews with scientists, medical doctors, and nutritionists. However, the anecdotes are colored a bit to make the book a cohesive, interesting read.
Q: How much research did The Healing Powers of Vinegar take?
The first time around it took a lot because I had to find vinegar proponents who had something new to say. The second edition was easier because I injected more humor, more stories that put my “paw print” on it making it unique. The third edition was a whopping challenge. Many of the vinegar companies, big and small, had either merged or were defunct so I was losing my big book. Some of my experts have passed. I felt like the old man in Hemingway’s classic fish tale. By the time I brought my vinegar book to shore it was bones and the flesh was gone. So I had to start fresh and put my vinegar book back together and now it’s a bigger fish!
Q: What is the message you hope to get across in this story?
When the book premise you start out with falls apart—it’s essential to think outside of the box and take another path to make it come together and be an original work of art.
Q: What is your goal or mission as a writer?
I aspire to make my Healing Powers Series a timeless collection so when I’m gone people of all ages can enjoy nature’s finest superfoods—vinegar, olive oil, chocolate, honey, and coffee-- to enhance their lives and well-being.
Q: Is there a question you really wish someone would ask, but they never do? If so what would be your reply?
Sure. “What book did you want to write?” I always wanted to write about my travels with a dog across America and Canada. And I get to do that in the Healing Powers Series. It’s called creative writing.
Q: What other projects do you have or are working on right now?
I just completed The Healing Powers of Tea. Pre-orders will begin in 2017 as it is in production right now. I should have my advance copies by next fall. We’re all very excited. The book will pair nicely with The Healing Powers of Honey (it will be published in mass market format March 2018).
Q: How can readers find you?
I’m easy to locate. For more information go to my website www.calorey.com –it will take you to Kensington Publishing Corp., social media (Facebook, Twitter, Linked In), and my blog. Also, I am frequently traveling to Barnes and Noble bookstores for book signings and visiting the Pacific Northwest to Eastern Canada. My books are available in ebook, paperback, mass market wherever books are sold.
Q: Who or what has influenced you and your writing?
John Steinbeck is still my hero. I chose him as one of the authors for my oral exams in graduate school. He used a first person narrative, reporting, and self-deprecating humor---and a dog—the components I include in my latest book The Healing Powers of Vinegar and forthcoming book on tea.
