Beauty for Ashes

“To appoint unto them that mourn in Zion,

to give unto them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning,

the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness;

that they might be called trees of righteousness,

the planting of the LORD, that he might be glorified.”

King James Version ~ Isaiah 61:3

To give unto them Beauty for Ashes…  Over 11 years ago this scripture was ministered to me.  At the time I really did not understand the full meaning.  The bible says that He goes before us and He prepares us for the things that we will go through.  He was giving me a promise for some very hard years that were in front of me and this portion of scripture has become more and more real to me through the years.  God has the desire to make each of us beautiful in his kingdom.  However, that beauty does not always come easily.  What did it mean that God said He gives beauty for ashes?  Although we are living in the time of Grace through Jesus Christ, the Old Testament gives us a picture, a plan of things God desires for us.  In the Old Testament God required sacrifices, burnt offerings on His altar and burnt offerings leave ashes.   God desires that each of us would give to Him our lives, our hearts, everything.  If we are truly going to be all that He desires us to be then we must give ourselves to him totally.  We must lay our lives upon His alter and allow Him to burn all the impurities out of our lives.  I believe the ashes represent a life totally given to Him.  A life that was willing to say “Not my will but Yours be done.”  A life completely consecrated to Him.  In the Old Testament burnt offerings were often offered hand in hand with fellowship offerings.  I find this very interesting.  When we totally give our lives to God it brings a greater intimacy with him; a greater fellowship and greater knowledge of Him. God’s desire for us is summed up in Romans 8:29 which says “For those God foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the likeness of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brothers.”   The road to get there is not always easy.   It is often difficult and filled with much heartache.   We must always remember that God is faithful in the difficult times.  If we will give Him everything and trust Him in all circumstances He will bring us through to the other side victorious and a little more like Him.  He says in Romans 8:28 “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.”  Always remember that God has your best interest at heart.  He loves you and cares for you.  You are special and He wants to make you beautiful for His kingdom.  He desires to work in each of us but we must die to our desires, our will, our way.  Jesus said in John 12:24  “I tell you the truth, unless a kernel of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains only a single seed. But if it dies, it produces many seeds.”  Beauty for Ashes; what a beautiful promise to those that love Him and serve Him faithfully.
