M Michele's Musings

In Storms I am Not Alone

Recently on my way home from work, a storm was brewing.  The sky was ominous with dark clouds rolling across the horizon.  Lightening was flashing in the distance and the rumble of thunder was heard above my truck radio.  It appeared a downpour was sure to be unleashed at any moment.  I contemplated how this scene reflected my mood.  I couldn’t really put a finger on it but turmoil was brewing in my heart.  The menacing weather was a perfect reflection of emotions running tumultuously to my very core.

As I drove on I noticed a field where cows were calmly eating the rich, lush grass around them.  Just behind them, in the near distance, I saw more bolts of lightning hit the ground with rolls of thunder crashing louder as I drove toward the worst of the weather.  I couldn’t get my mind off the cows and how they were in perfect peace despite the pending storm approaching fast.  The cows were oblivious to the darkness of the sky.  They seemed unconcerned with the flashes of lightening and rolls of thunder knocking at their back door.

My thoughts drifted.  Why wasn’t I like the cows?  Why was I letting the cares of the world weigh me down?  Why was I allowing discouragement to overwhelm my heart?  Somehow the sight of the herd’s serenity in the midst of the pending storm brought me a sense of peace.  Comforting words from the Bible softly ran across my mind, Fear not, be of good courage, I am with you.

I refocused on the sky above me.  This time I began to notice the subtle beauty of the clouds with every imaginable shade of gray and white intermingled.  Though dark, the sky before me was actually quite beautiful.  The splendor of the lightening brightened the scene intermittently with flashes of white light filling the sky, almost blinding in its intensity.

 Words from Psalm 18 filled my heart and mind.

For you will light my lamp:

the LORD my God will enlighten my darkness.

For by You I can run against a troop,

By my God I can leap over a wall.

As for God, His way is perfect;

The word of the Lord is proven;

He is a shield to all who trust in Him.

Once again, my thoughts turned to the cows in the field.  They were trusting and at peace despite the tumult surrounding them.  They had all they needed right there beneath their hooves.  Water was filled to the brim in troughs, the grass was plentiful, they had family and friends near, and they were surrounded by a fence meant to keep them safe and sound by their owners who cared for them daily.  The cows’ world was perfect even though a significant storm brewed nearby.

    Tears sprung to my eyes as I realized that my world was perfect too, even with the bumps and thumps of life.  I eat every day (sometimes too much), I am surrounded by family and friends who love me and most of all, my Father in Heaven has put a hedge of protection around me to keep me safe and sound.  Nothing can touch me apart from His permission.  I am blessed beyond measure.  He loves me, I am His, He goes before me, He will never leave me and He keeps me just as His Word tells us all over and over again throughout the Bible.

“I have loved you with an everlasting love.”

                                                              Jeremiah 31:3

"My beloved is mine, and I am His.”

                                                              Song of Solomon 2:16

“ the LORD, He goes before me;

He will be with me, He will not fail me, neither forsake me”

                                                                                          Deuteronomy 31:8

“It is God who arms me with strength,

And makes my way perfect.

He makes my feet like the feet of deer,

And sets me on my high places.”

                                                              Psalms 18:32-33

God loves you too.  You are not alone despite what life might be throwing at you.  The storm will never have victory because God is in control and He is watching over you to care for you and protect you.  God comforts us with these words, “Fear thou not; for I am with you: be not dismayed; for I am your God: I will strengthen you; yes, I will help you; yes, I will uphold thee with the right hand of My righteousness.” (Isaiah 41:10-13) and in Hebrews He guarantees each of us, “Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.”  (Hebrews 13:5b)  You are loved, you are special and you are in His care always and forever.
