Thorns

Thorns don’t always come wrapped in neat, pretty little packages do they?  Life has a way of offering us thorns.   God, on the other hand, offers hope in the midst of all the thorns life has to offer.

In 2nd Corinthians 12:7 we read…

“And lest I should be exalted above measure through the abundance of the revelations,

there was given to me a thorn in the flesh, the messenger of Satan to buffet me,

lest I should be exalted above measure.”

God had a plan and a purpose in allowing Paul to suffer this thorn.  God is the same yesterday, today and forever.  He hasn’t changed.  He has a plan and purpose for your life; a plan and a purpose for allowing thorns just as he did in Paul’s life.  In 2nd Corinthians 12:8 we see that though Paul cried out for this “thorn” to be removed from him, God had a plan for this thorn to keep him humble and to strengthen him in Christ.  In 2nd Corinthians 12:9 God gave Paul an answer and a word of hope that would sustain him, despite the thorn in his life.

“And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness.”

Remember God has a plan and a purpose.  In Jeremiah 29:11 we read,

“For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the LORD,

thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you a hope and a future.”

Remember God is on your side and He is ever faithful.  He is your hope.  He loves you with an everlasting love..  He causes all things to work together for good to those who love Him and are called according to his purpose.  Why?

“For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son”

Whether the thorn is from God, Satan or our own mistakes, whatever form it takes, whether through sickness, difficult people or situations; God can take the thorn and use it to make us “beautiful” through Him.  No longer does the thorn show but the beauty of the vessel, the beauty of the package shows through.  Like a rosebush, we don’t see the thorns for the beauty of the flower.  Allow God to work and God’s Word to sustain you.  His Grace is sufficient.  He will carry you through.  Trust Him.  Believe Him.  Give Him your life.  He is in the process of making you more like His Son.  His Glory will be shown in you.  Soon all people see is the package and not the thorn; they see His beauty.

“behold, I will lay thy stones with fair colours, and lay thy foundations with sapphires.

And I will make thy windows of agates, and thy gates of carbuncles, and all thy borders of pleasant stones.”

“To appoint unto them that mourn in Zion, to give unto them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning,

the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they might be called trees of righteousness,

the planting of the LORD, that he might be glorified.”       Isaiah 54:11b-12; 61:3
