Mary's Song

And Mary said, My soul doth magnify the Lord,
And my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour.
For he hath regarded the low estate of his handmaiden: for, behold, from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed.
For he that is mighty hath done to me great things; and holy is his name.
And his mercy is on them that fear him from generation to generation.
He hath shewed strength with his arm; he hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts.
He hath put down the mighty from their seats, and exalted them of low degree.
He hath filled the hungry with good things; and the rich he hath sent empty away.
He hath helped his servant Israel, in remembrance of his mercy;
As he spake to our fathers, to Abraham, and to his seed forever.

Good Tidings and Great Joy to you!  The season to celebrate the birth of our beautiful Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ is upon us again.  I am rejoicing in God’s precious gift to mankind. There truly is “good tidings of great joy” just as the angel said unto the shepherds, (Luke 2:10b-11) “behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, which is Christ the Lord.” because God has given us the greatest gift ever, his only begotten Son, Jesus Christ.

There is a beautiful Christmas song by Amy Grant called “Breath of Heaven.” A verse in this song captured my very heart and made me think about Mary and how she carried Jesus in a way I had never quite thought about before.  The verse says “Holy Father you have come and chosen me now to carry your Son.”  As I pondered this verse I was struck with the thought that just as Mary was called to carry Jesus (in the physical) that we too are all called to carry Jesus (in the spiritual).  Every one of us is called to carry Him in our hearts and lives so that we can share His love with others.  Jesus is the gift that keeps on giving but He needs a willing vessel as God found in a willing Mary.  Mary was a handmaiden of the Lord.  She humbly accepted God’s providence in her life to carry Jesus even though it could have cost her life.  It could not have been an easy thing for Mary to accept this calling God had for her but nonetheless she said, (Luke 1:38b) “be it unto me according to thy word.”  Mary was walking in trust toward the Lord.  She knew that God was faithful.  God had a plan for Mary’s life and the new life she was carrying within her womb.  She was going to bring forth a child that was to be the Savior of this world.  God sent His Son so that He might give life to us and that we could share that life with others.

We too can share in Mary's praise to the Lord; (Luke 1:46-47, 49a) “My soul doth magnify the Lord, And my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour.  For he that is mighty hath done to me great things."  As we celebrate the  Christmas season let us thank God for His awesome gift to us and let us rejoice in God’s love for us.  Let us share His love toward others.  Let us not forget that He truly is the Reason for the Season.  Remember that you are loved; You are special; You are chosen.   You are called to carry Jesus’ love to others.  Let us trust as Mary trusted.  Let us believe that God can do the impossible through our lives and bring hope to a world that so needs the love of God to be shown.

May you be blessed beyond measure this Christmas and throughout the New Year as it unfolds before you.  Peace be multiplied to you as you celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ.
