P Power of Positive Faith

Experiencing Joy through Pain!

“The Joy of the Lord is my strength” is a scripture and a song I love.  At times, I just think about those words, I feel encouraged and I feel joy.

Have you ever thought about what true joy is all about? It is not about feelings at all; it is about knowing that you can experience joy even if you feel discomfort or displeasure.

Nehemiah said, "Go and enjoy choice food and sweet drinks, and send some to those who have nothing prepared. This day is holy to our Lord. Do not grieve, for the joy of the LORD is your strength." Nehemiah 8:10

I am sure you have been around people who exude joy.  I love these people.  Their attitudes are simply contagious and what they feel, you can feel too. If you are down, watching them brings you up. If you are experiencing heartache, they know how to help you overcome. You know the kind of person I am talking about; they change their environment; they change the entire mood of a room and they change you.

Unbelievably, there are people who do not want to feel joy. They prefer to walk around down and out, in the dumps and they want to stay there, thank you very much. They hold onto sadness like a blanket. They cling to the heartache as if letting go will make them less than.

There is no problem being sad; it is a human emotion. The problem comes when that sadness stays with you.  It comes when you decide to live with the sorrow at the forefront day in and day out, rather than to stop and recognize what you are allowing to happen.

There is no doubt that we all have real life challenges. I believe that we will experience every aspect of emotion that is imaginable throughout our lives; and God knows that too. However, God expects us to run to Him when we feel and sense hopelessness.  He expects us to lean on Him when we feel helpless. He wants to help us experience joy through our pain.

Do you understand that as Believers, we have the Holy Spirit? The Holy Spirit helps us in our challenging times. He wants to help us break through and to be victorious in our lives. Jesus said that He would send a Comforter that would lead us and guide us through all that we face.

One of my favorite scriptures Ecclesiastes 3:12 says, “I know that there is nothing better for people than to be happy and to do good while they live.” That scripture says it for me.  We are to live happy, joyful and victorious. Why?  Because we know that in all things, God is working it out (Romans 8:28). We know that “He has a plan for each of us” (Jeremiah 29:11).  I also know that He has given special gifts that no one can take away, those gifts, and His calling on your life will “not be taken back” (Romans 11:29). Just in those three scriptures, you find reasons to be joyful.

No, I will never downplay anyone’s pain or suffering. I will say that there is hope and there is help when you learn to put your faith in Jesus.

Sadness is contagious. Joy like sadness is also contagious. If you are a follower of Christ, which will you choose?  Whether you agree or not, it is a choice. You can choose faith or fear, optimism or pessimism, hope or hopelessness. I trust that God wants you to take the faith approach. He promised that He would never leave you alone. I try to think of that as I face challenges in my life.  Will you do that same?
