Change is Never Easy

Change is never easy.  Most people are resistant to change to a certain degree.  Change brings about a sense of insecurity and a sense of lack of control.  Change makes us feel our future is uncertain.  We get comfortable with the “familiar” because we know what to expect and we feel a sense of safety and security in that.  That is what causes us to get in a rut, not reach for our dreams, not set goals, and not progress.  But, change is vitally necessary in order to grow and progress in life.

One of my clients made a decision to make some really big life changes.  Her health was depending on this change.  She also needed to make this change in order to grow as a person and break away from a somewhat unhealthy and unproductive lifestyle.  She began making steps toward these changes and was successfully starting to do what it took and was seeing some positive changes.  But, there was some resistance and also some feelings of sadness and insecurity because of it.

When we begin to make changes in our life to pursue a healthier and more productive life it requires that we let go of things that hinder those changes, and that isn’t easy.  Not everyone will agree with or understand our changes either.

She reached out to me for encouragement and advice when facing the resistance and all the feelings that came with it.  This was my response to her.  But it certainly can apply to us all as we set out to make changes we need to make in our life to better our life!

“I totally get it. Change is never easy. Especially when others around us…the people closest to us…don’t understand. The hard truth is you have to do it anyway. Sometimes we have to make choices to move forward and make changes and leave things (and life as we know it) behind and it hurts. But in the long run we are happier than we’ve ever been. This is a change in your life. This is one chapter ending and another chapter beginning. The story of our life can’t continue unless we end one chapter and begin another. Of course we could choose to stay exactly where we are but in the end we would remain stagnant, unhealthy (not just physically), and never knowing what life holds for us. You have to push forward through these times knowing that it’s not going to be easy. This is where your inner strength and determination comes in. Keep your eyes and your focus on what lies ahead. You have a huge future ahead of you. You will help so many people in the process. And your true friends will be by your side every step of the way even through the things they don’t understand. Along the way you will gain new friends. There will be people who will come along side you to help you and be there for you and become lifelong friends as well. You will mourn the things that you have to let go of. But know that there are so many other greater things ahead of you. You have that to look forward to!”

This applies to us all!  We have a big and bright future ahead of us if we just pursue it!  We will help others in the process and by becoming the best version of ourselves!  But this will require us to make changes along the way.  Don’t be afraid of the changes!  Don’t let making changes stop you!  Trust God to help you in the process and guide you as you make changes and pursue your best life!  We can never end one chapter in our life and begin another without changes!
